Install Performance Muffler Jeep Wrangler JK

Article by Mark Trotta

Replacing the muffler on your JK Wrangler involves unbolting the clamp that connects it to the axle pipe, prying the left and right hooks out of the rubber hangers, wiggling the old unit back and forth to remove it, then installing the new one.

Stock vs Aftermarket

If you're debating over factory OEM replacement or an aftermarket performance/exhaust kit, an aftermarket piece will be much less expensive, but aside from price, the big difference is sound. Factory exhaust is quiet, and a performance muffler will give your Jeep a nice tone.

Recently I installed a Flashark performance muffler on my 2016 Wrangler, right on my driveway. The Jeep has a 3-1/2" lift, so there was no need for a floor jack or jack stands.

Remove and install procedures are the same for all 2007 through 2018 Wrangler 2-door and 4-door models.

Tools Needed

For this job, all that was needed was a 16mm deep socket on a 3/8" ratchet, and a pair of 9-1/2" straight jaw pliers.

Removal and Installation (8 Steps)

Step 1) After laying down a piece of cardboard underneath the truck, spray some penetrating lubricant (like WD-40 or PB Blaster) on the axle to muffler clamp and let it soak.

NOTE: Safety glasses and gloves are always advisable when working underneath your vehicle.

Step 2) Loosen the axle pipe to muffler clamp nut with a 16mm deep socket.

If you're re-using the old clamp like I am, temporarily push out of the way.

Step 3) Release the left, then the right hanger from the rubber insulators. These can be tough to separate.

TIP: Prior to removal, lubricate the exhaust barbs (WD40 or silicon spray) to assist the process. I found that a pair of Channellock pliers work well in the cramped space.

Step 4) Slowly and carefully, rock the old muffler from side to side, with both hands, while pulling outward.

If you're not getting anywhere, stop. Spray some penetrating fluid on it, and give it time to soak.

TIP: Have a milk crate or something similar to drop the old muffler onto.

Disclosure

Back in June 2026, Flashark Racing contacted me with a proposal; if I would write an article on headers vs exhaust manifolds, they would supply the headers. My response was, "I have no current projects needing headers, but my 2016 Jeep Wrangler needs a rear muffler".

Ten days later a UPS truck pulls up to my house and drops off a new Jeep muffler!

Upon opening the box, I noticed that the passenger side tailpipe was not attached. This is likely to allow for easier, less expensive shipping.

Two stainless steel clamps are included. Also included was a tube of grey RTV sealant, which I didn't need.

Nice looking welds.

Before installing, compare old and new pipe ID's and make sure they were both the same (2.5").

The Flashark muffler's exhaust tips were a little further apart than the old ones, but it doesn't affect fitment.

Step 5) If you're installing a new clamp, slide it onto the muffler inlet pipe.

Step 6) Lift the new muffler into place and guide the inlet pipe over the factory axle pipe.

Step 7) Insert the left and right metal hanger prongs back into the rubber isolators.

Step 8) Align the muffler and exhaust tips evenly, then tighten the clamps.

Road Test

At idle, there's just a hint of rumble. At low speeds, no annoying droning, just a slight tone. But when you step on the gas, it lets out a roar!

Final Thoughts

Fitment was spot-on, pipe bends were accurate, and the muffler needed very little adjustment. It took me a little over an hour to install (stopping from time to time to take pictures).

The sound is deeper and louder than stock, but not offensively loud. All in all, it's an easy upgrade for Jeep owners looking to add a little performance with some attitude!
