Jeep Death Wobble Cause and Cure

Although no two cases are alike, Jeep death wobble is always caused by a worn, damaged, or defective steering or suspension component. Common culprits are track bar bushings, idler arm, tie rods, and ball joints. And many times it's more than just one component.
Jeep steering wobble itself can be set off by several things, including tires out of balance, an unexpected bump in the road, and even badly warped brake discs.
What Is Death Wobble?
Back in 2016, I was working at a tire shop. A customer said their Wrangler had a terrible vibration at highway speed and asked me to road test it.
The first few miles were uneventful, until I turned onto an open highway. As soon as I got up to about 60 mph, the entire vehicle started shaking violently and uncontrollably, ripping the steering wheel out of my hands.
Startled to say the least (!) I instinctively took my foot off the gas, and once the vehicle slowed down a bit, it regained stability. Fortunately, there were no cars around me.
Wow - it was like nothing I had experienced before.
Death Wobble Causes
As mentioned, steering wobble can be caused by a number of things. Repairing and replacing one part at a time allows you find out what the main cause was, but most owners replace questionable parts together.
NOTE: Death Wobble affects all solid-axle vehicles, not just Jeep Wranglers.
Tires and Alignment
Cupped, unevenly worn, or poorly balanced tires can contribute to unstable steering.
On lifted Jeeps, improper caster angle may also lead to instability/steering wobble.

To wrap up the story about the customer's Jeep, the track bar bushings, idler arm, and outer tie rods showed signs of wear and were replaced. An alignment was done along with tire rebalancing.
And the second road test was much less eventful.

Inspect Front End Components
If you don't have all the old service records to your Wrangler, you won't know when any of the wearable suspension parts were replaced (if ever).

After safely lifting the front axle and setting on jack stands, check all front end parts for damage and/or wear.
TIP: A crowbar is helpful to wiggle everything while looking for play.

Conclusion
Steering wobble is dangerous and should be a major concern for all Jeep Wrangler owners. But if you keep up on maintenance and inspect the front end periodically, you will likely never experience it.
